About The Author
Writing and reading has always been my favorite escape hatch. As a kid, I filled notebooks with stories, some wildly imaginative, others loosely inspired by whatever bit of history I was obsessed with at the time. But when it came to college, I chose a more practical path. I put myself through the University of Illinois and earned a degree in Occupational Therapy, figuring I would need a steady paycheck to tackle student loans.
It turns out the world of S.O.A.P. notes (that stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) is not exactly a breeding ground for creative expression. Over time, those clinical notes nearly squeezed the storytelling right out of me. Later, I earned a Master of Science in Business Administration from Notre Dame and got swept up in the demands of professional life.
I dabbled in writing here and there, mostly essays about moments that struck me as either
deeply moving or wildly frustrating, but the idea of writing a novel stayed tucked in the back of
my mind, collecting dust.
Fast forward. I built a business that went public, raced sailboats, adopted a fierce and
complicated nine-year-old, weathered a couple of marriages, and eventually found myself
retired and remarried. This time it feels like a keeper. In addition to my daughter, I have three
amazing stepchildren, all adults now. During COVID, I bought a house in San Pancho, Mexico, a charming beach town that lit a spark I could not ignore.
That spark became my debut novel, Winds of San Samora. It is a story inspired by the beauty,
grit, and mystery I found while wandering cobbled streets, shooing chickens, and meeting
interesting people.
These days, when I am not writing, I serve as board president of a children's museum in South
Haven, Michigan, where I also teach tai chi and yoga. Life is full, a little messy, and always
interesting. Just the way I like it.
