Residents and officials in San Pancho, Nayarit, who have long protested the Punta Paraíso luxury condominium development, are facing serious legal retaliation. Despite years of opposition and appeals to government officials, the developer, Lemmus Real Estate, has continued building on what activists claim is federally protected coastline (Zofemat).
In late 2023, six activists—including a state lawmaker—discovered their personal bank accounts were frozen due to a defamation lawsuit filed by the developer, who claims the protests cost them over 12 million pesos. The activists say they were never notified of the lawsuit and had no opportunity to defend themselves, raising concerns about the legality and fairness of the court ruling.
Legal experts suggest the freeze may have violated due process. Meanwhile, activists remain determined, warning that unchecked development in San Pancho threatens the entire coastline. Despite intimidation and legal challenges, they vow to continue their fight to protect the beach.
